The transition from primary to secondary school is an exciting time for students and their parents. It is the next stage in a lifelong educational journey leading to new experiences and challenges. After the relatively familiar surroundings of primary school, it can be daunting moving to a secondary school where there are so many new experiences to navigate.

Boroondara Park P.S. has many initiatives in place to ensure the transition to secondary school is a positive experience for our students and their parents.

Secondary School Visits

Each child in Grade 5 and 6 will visit a secondary school in our area at least once prior to the scheduled Orientation Day. We also welcome many secondary school teachers who come and visit our Grade 6 students and their teachers.

Student Forum

Several past students participate in an open forum morning. Participants are from both independent and government schools (single gender and co-educational). It is at this forum that our current grade sixes ask questions and hear of the challenges and positive experiences of their peers.

Teacher Collaboration

We collaborate with many secondary schools to ease the students through the transition period. This is achieved through verbal and/or written communication between the child’s Year 6 teacher and a representative from the secondary school. The Grade 5 & 6 teachers at Boroondara Park P.S. frequently visit our local secondary schools and have developed excellent professional relationships with our colleagues in many secondary schools.

Teaching & Learning Strategies

Steps are also taken to prepare children for the different teaching methods of secondary school. We use a variety of team teaching strategies to ensure that the children develop skills in connecting and collaborating with a variety of teachers.

Student Wellbeing Program

All of this is underpinned by our strong commitment to Student Wellbeing. The entire learning program advocates the development of children’s ability to express and overcome fears, build self confidence and personal leadership skills.
