Background to the iPad Program at BPPS
In 2012 Eric Regester (Principal) and Justin Hone (our then Leading Teacher/ICT) attended a network professional learning session on 1:1 iPad Program presented at the Karralyka Centre before attending Department of Education and Training workshops at both Treasury Place and The Nossal High School during 2013.
In the time leading up to the implementation they visited Greythorn PS, North Ringwood PS and Heidelberg PS to see the practical application and combined this and their reading on research available at the time, particularly the results from the Department’s 1-1 trial in 2011.
They presented to School Council, then sent letters home to gauge support. They ran an information night and then once again gauged support. In Term 1, 2014 they held a more specific night to inform the parents as to the practicalities of the program before starting Week, 2, Term 2, 2014.
They looked at the policies and forms used by Greythorn Primary, St Leonard’s College and Kew PS to formulate our school’s.
In Term 4 they surveyed parents, students and teachers on the program.
Presentations were made to School Council and to the parents.
The program began in 2014 and is now in operation from Grades 3-6 through a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.
The school also has iPads in our Foundation to Grade 2 program on a 1:2 and others in our Performing Arts, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and our Learning Support Program.
We are ably supported through our school and Department based technicians.
Finally we adopt the SAMR Model when implementing the use of ICTs. This video provides a good summary of the model and the why and when we use ICTs at BPPS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBce25r8vto
This year our Digital Learning Team (with representation across the school) have a number of projects we are working on. One is to build on the knowledge and application of digital learning tools to enhance student learning outcomes. In our upcoming Curriculum Day we have a session devoted to a number of applications relevant across the Digital Learning platform. Along with this we have begun a close relationship with various members of the Apple Education Program.
